You’ll learn using two Hindi postpositions

You’ll learn how to answer a question on “where” ?

In English, we generally use two common English prepositions for this purpose.

For example :

Where are you ?

Answers could be :

I am in Mumbai  or

I am on an elephant.

We are using prepositions : In and On.

This lesson , we shall see how to use these prepositions in Hindi

Question Where are you ? तुम कहाँ हो ? (tum kahaan ho ?)
Answer 1 I am in Mumbai. मैं मुंबई में हूँ | (main mumbai me hoon)
Answer 2 I am at/on the station मैं स्टेशन पर हूँ | (main station pe/par hoon)

 

  में (me) = In

पर (par) = On

Situations where “in” is used
In countries, cities, institutions, 

 

अमरीका में (amreeka me)In America मैं अमरीका में रहता हूँ |(main amreeka me rahataa hoon)

I live in America.

भारत में (bhaarat me)In India मैं भारत में हूँ |(main bhaarat me hoon)

I am in India.

चीन में (cheen me)In China पीटर चीन में है |(peter cheen me hain)

Peter is in China.

न्यूयॉर्क में (new york me)In New york पीटर न्यूयॉर्क में है |(peter  newyork me hain)

Peter is in China.

अस्पताल में (aspataal me)In hospital मोनिका अस्पताल में है |(monica aspataal me hain)

Monica is in Hospital.

 

 

Situations where “on” is used
on the surface, कुर्सी पर (kursee par)on the chair मैं कुर्सी पर बैठा हूँ |(main kursee par baithaa hoon)

I am sitting on the chair.

टेबल पर (table par)on the table कुर्सी टेबल पर हैं(kursee table par hain)

Chair is on the table.

हाथी पर (haathee par)On the elephant पीटर हाथी पर बैठा हैं |(peter haathee pe baitha hain)

Peter is sitting on elephant

  1. You have used “main kursee par baithaa hoon” for “I am sitting on the chair”.

    Please clarify : is sitting = bait ragtha (present continuous tense).
    That should be “main kursee par bait ragthaa hoon”. Am I not right here. Please clarify.

  2. Dear Sir:

    Minor correction suggested. है | Hai should be used in lieu of हैं= hain, as the following two sentences are in singular form . I mean dot and nasal sound will not be used when written/pronounced hai .

    टेबल पर (table par)on the table कुर्सी टेबल पर हैं(kursee table par hain)
    Chair is on the table.

    हाथी पर (haathee par)On the elephant पीटर हाथी पर बैठा हैं |(peter haathee pe baitha hain)
    Peter is sitting on elephant.
